AVOCATING FOR OUR COMMUNITY
The former Mayor described Santee as “The La Jolla of East County”. While many people made fun of that comment, Santee has the 7th highest household income in San Diego County and the highest in East County. Ronn coined the phrase “Santee is where East County Shops”.
People from many communities love coming to Santee parks and stores because they are second to none in East County. Our Spring Concerts, Summer Concerts, Fido Fest, Santee Street Fair, Brews and Bites, and our 4th of July fireworks draw families from near and far.
It is important to tackle long-term problems that will affect our city. I’m on many countywide local government committees to advocate for our community, giving Santee a voice!
The City Council is developing an Arts and Entertainment District, and a new Community Center, to help Santee enhanced its sense of community, where people want to live, shop, play, in a unique and positive way.
Ronn Hall has worked hard to respond to your needs. He makes a point to quickly respond to phone calls or email concerns.
Santee District 2 is unique, it covers the area just east of Santana High School south to the Gillespie Field Airport, including the business districts, Graves Avenue up to Sky Ranch, then north along to the Lakeside border on both sides of the freeway.
Ronn’s personal goal is to make sure our roads are updated, traffic is flowing well, and all of your concerns are addressed. He has adopted the Rotarian’s official motto “Service Above Self” to all his work at the Santee City Council. The most frustrating part of government is when you have a concern or issue that may need to be corrected, your views are not heard or acted on. At his request, the city now monitors Facebook, Nextdoor, and other social networks to look for citizen concerns and quickly respond to them.
Public Safety is the first duty of government. Ronn has collaborated with the Sheriff’s Department to reduce crime and limit drug activity. He has taken ride-along trips to point out areas of concern and to learn about others. We have reduced crime over the last 4 years.
As a council member he has made sure the Santee Fire Department has the latest and safest equipment, including three new Brush Rigs to defend our hillsides around our homes. Santee is working with the San Diego River Conservancy to clear the bush in and area around the riverbeds.
These improvements give all the Santee Fire Personal the ability to provide immediate response to our citizens of Santee.
New Building and projects are nice but if the city’s budget can’t afford them, then the city has to raise fee and taxes. Ronn stands firmly against this. He feels a huge responsibility to ensure Santee remains affordable for families, seniors, and future generations. Rising costs can put pressure on households as well as on the city budget, so every spending decision should be guided by a commitment to protecting residents from unnecessary
financial burdens.
A responsible approach means putting the community’s core needs first. Public safety, maintained parks and streets because these are the services that families, seniors, and future generations rely on every day. By focusing on these essentials, it will ensure that Santee remains not just attractive, but truly livable while living within our budget.
Mayor Minto and Ronn Hall have been active on the Santee Homeless Taskforce for over two years. Many of our homeless are living in or around our riverbeds. In the past, the city has partnered with ECTLC (East County Transitional Living Center) and PATH (People Assisting the Homeless) to provide housing and related services.
The Homeless Taskforce has been active in helping reduce the homeless in Santee. The Taskforce now includes the Sheriff Department, who walk through the riverbeds offering services; along with the Fire Department and other organizations that collaborate in an effort to help the homeless. Their splendid work has helped Santee cut our homeless in half (according to a survey by the San Diego River Park Foundation). Ronn will continue to help work with this Taskforce to provide help to the homeless because nobody needs to live this way.
SUPPORTING BETTER TRANSPORTATION
Transportation has changed drastically in the last 26 years. Y2K was one of the biggest concerns back then, the iPhone was just a drawing on someone’s desk. Much has changed in those years; we now have Uber and Lift; self-driving taxis are now common in some cities. Cars are very important in Santee; Self-Driving Cars are starting to become the norm. Electric cars, buses, even trash trucks are now in operation in our city. It’s time we look toward the future and not be caught up in decades of old thinking. I will still support our right to drive our own car, while offering choices and looking for ways to allow traffic to flow better on our streets.
Traffic is clearly one of the main concerns of Santee residents. If you’ve sat on the 52 at rush hour you’re convinced! The Mayor, myself, and other interested parties formed the Highway 52 Coalition because this issue is truly regional. The purpose of the Coalition is to build broad support and seek funding for improvements to SR 52 in advance of the 2035 to 2050 schedule in SANDAG’s current Regional Transportation Plan.
Santee has acquired $2.5 million with the help of Darrell Issa, $12 million from SANDAG. This has sped up the process, we now have changes underway with hopes to give relief by 2028. However, Santee alone cannot solve the current and projected congestion on SR 52, we need the collaboration with local and regional stakeholders. Santee can seek to build support for addressing the problem. The Coalition will help explain the problem, the need for a solution, look to find the funding and why it is in the region’s interest to address the problem. Let’s all work with them to solve this to get a “Real Fix to the 52”. Please click the link to find out the progress and how you can help us in this venture to fix the 52.
